The Sion Bass House Spa

Now a boutique hotel featuring an ADA compliant suite, the 1842 Sion Bass House was first built in downtown Fort Wayne in the federal style and then updated later in the 19th Century to an Italianate house. Its illustrious history includes namesake, Sion Bass, a Southern Abolitionist who moved to Fort Wayne in the 1850s. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, Mr. Bass volunteered and was given the rank of colonel and command of the 30th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

A protected historical site, the décor of the Sion Bass House Spa includes Civil War era furnishings. The theme of each room or suite centers on a local participant in the Civil War, starting from Sion Bass himself and ranging to Fort Wayne’s Hugh McCulloch, Secretary of Treasury under three presidents beginning with Lincoln. McCulloch was a key figure in calculating how to finance the Civil War for the North and in laying the groundwork for today’s Federal Reserve Bank.

The Sion Bass House has a boutique hotel atmosphere. It features spa amenities with the only jacuzzis in downtown accommodations. The Lincoln Room is an ADA compliant guest room with a fireplace of the same make, model and vintage as existed in the room in which Abraham Lincoln died.

The Sion Bass House has a lovely gathering room, with comfortable seating, a large desk for use by guests, a bar with a bar sink, and refreshments including gourmet coffee and tea.

As downtown Fort Wayne’s premier accommodations, the historic 1842 home of Civil War hero Sion Bass welcomes all guests with special attention to the disabled traveler in our Lincoln Suite!
